Pop Smoke makes his posthumous debut for as a solo artist, on the Hot 100 chart.
New York rapper is the most recent rapper who has been tragically taken from us way too soon. In the last year we have seen a number of names in Hip-Hop fall victim to either drug or gun related deaths and it just has to stop! Many of these rappers; Mac Miller, XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD, Nipsey Hussle, Lil Peep and now Pop Smoke have all seen much posthumous success, with their streaming numbers and record sales skyrocketing after news of their passing breaks. This unfortunate trend begs the question, why don’t we give people their flowers until it’s too late?
News of Pop Smoke’s death broke early last Wednesday when it was revealed that the rapper was shot and killed at the home he was renting in the Hollywood Hills, during a home invasion. Authorities still say they haven’t made any conclusions about a motive and no arrests have been made.
Today, Billboard revealed their updated Hot 100 charts, and Smoke’s “Dior” made the No. 49 spot. The Brooklyn native dropped his second mixtape, Meet The Woo 2 on February 7, less than two weeks before his death. The project sold 36,000 album-equivalent units. Smoke was projected to have much success on the horizon and has even been compared to 50 Cent many times.
