Since his release from prison a year ago, Meek Mill has teamed with Jay-Z to launch a criminal justice reform organization, created a documentary, and tapped into the sports apparel retail business.
Now, Meek Mill has joined forces with Jay-Z and Roc Nation to launch his new Dream Chasers label. Roc-Nation announced the partnership through their Instagram, captioning:
“@meekmill launches Dream Chasers Records, a joint venture label with #RocNation. @meekmill will serve as the President of Dream Chasers, where he will oversee the label and build a staff that will spearhead talent acquisition and development, label operations, creative strategy, marketing and legal, among other positions. “Creating a record label has always been the next step in my journey as a businessman and I appreciate Roc Nation and JAY-Z’s support on this new venture,” Mill said. “I want to take my experiences in the music industry, use them to find young, hungry talent and open doors for the next generation of artists.”
Meek said, “I think the time is now. I’m 32 years old, I’m in a nice spot in the music business and I think it’s time for me to focus on growing artists because that’s what I love to do. I love to spend time on helping artists grow, and I think it’s time for me to dive in, business-wise.”
“Of course I had offers to do a lot of business with other people, but the relationship we’ve built from (Roc Nation) believing in me through my whole career, through my ups and downs and the morals they showed to me and my team when it wasn’t in their best interest to have showed it — I feel comfortable going through this right here at home,” Mill said. “We’re ready to work. We’re just starting the beginning of a new chapter, a new page.”
Jay-Z then spoke about Meek saying, “His integrity, his honesty, his sense of responsibility. Everything that he’s done leading up to this point, it showed that he can carry that weight for the next generation of people. Everybody can sign some artists, make some money and brag about how hot they are for … (but) for us, we look at the big picture. For us, it’s way beyond signing hot artists and having a hot record.”
Jay continued on, “We come from the same neighborhoods, been through the same things. We’re some of the few that made it through … and that responsibility is not lost on us. We haven’t made it to this point just to be like, ‘Let’s just irresponsibly live our life.’ We had fun, don’t get me wrong. It’s fun too, but there’s a responsibility that we carry for the entire culture.”
Meek will continue to drop music on Maybach/Atlantic, saying he has “new content” on the agenda ahead of going on tour with Future.
