After staging a hate crime in January and turning himself over to the Chicago Police Department in February, Jussie Smollett has been indicted on 16 felony accounts by the Cook County grand jury.
While previously being only charged one account for filing a false police statement, the grand jury announced the “Empire” actor had given 16 false reports to Officer Baig and Detective Murray of Cook County after further investigation. While 1 felony of a false witness can land someone 1 to 3 years in prison, Smollett with 16 charges, is lucky that all of his accounts are running concurrently so he is still only facing 1 to 3 years.
It seemed that Smollett’s issues were turning around after deciding to turn himself in February 21st and later having his accomplices, the Osundairo brothers, state a public apology but it doesn’t look like the “Empire” producers are letting up. The producers of the show have decided to remove Jussie’s character, Jamal, from the rest of the season to avoid any further disruption.
