Last week we lost the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and while many are still mourning her loss and remembering her legacy, fans and social media were also not looking forward to any tributes that MTV had planned.

Citing that MTV wouldn’t get the right artists to honor the late Queen, many fans took to Twitter to shade MTV and Pop icon Madonna for her speech. Many quickly pointed out that Madonna’s speech was mainly self-centered and had nothing to do with respecting Aretha Franklin.

Sharing a story of how she found her success with the help of Franklin, Madonna eventually made her point by the speeches end stating:

You’re probably all wondering why I’m telling you this story,” she said. “None of [my success] would’ve happened, could’ve happened, without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today. And I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight. I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us: R-e-s-p-e-c-t. Long live the Queen.
