Last night, Nicki Minaj was live streamed on TIDAL speaking to rap journalist, Elliot Wilson, on his CRWN interview series in New York.
Very candidly, Nicki Minaj discussed why she and her team chose to delay the release of her new album, “Queen.” Changes to the album was also discussed, such as adding the new track, “FEFE,” with controversial rapper, Tekashi 6ix9ine, as a bonus track. Nicki was excited about the change saying, “Shout out to my baby Tekashi. I love him. Because of streaming, we can update the albums.”
She did not address the controversy surrounding 6ix9ine when asked about her reasoning for working with him. Her logic behind the collaboration was not because “6ix9ine was popular, it’s because [“FEFE”] reminded me of “Slumber Party” by Gucci Mane.” Minaj also wants to make some more changes to her recent collaborations. Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee collaborated with her on “Chun Swae,” in which she said was “done in 15 minutes.” She also discussed the collab with Nas on the track “Sorry.” It is not included on her “Queen” album because the sample clearance issues would have delayed the LP’s release.
The LP was a sample from Tracy Chapman in which she claims her team did not know the sample was uncleared. Regarding the ranks of contemporary female rappers, Minaj stated, “I can’t not have the top position.” But, Minaj claims that even after the dispute about “Motorsport,” she and Cardi B were on cordial terms after speaking at the Met Gala. Nicki Minaj also brings up Remy Ma, but generally speaking, Minaj stated, “If a person keeps on offending you, you might have to address it at some point. If that time comes, I’m prepared.”
