You probably don’t want to remember anything about 2016. But if you do go back in your memories you might remember the Grammy campaign that Chance The Rapper ran. The campaign was to urge The Recording Academy to consider free music, and independent artists for awards.
Someone heard his call to action, and The Recording Academy announced that would consider the independent music. There are some rules in order for an independent streaming service to be considered. The site must exist for a year and have a paid subscription.
Chance’s “Coloring Book” was released through Apple Music, and has been nominationed for awards in the Best New Artist and Best Rap Album categories. When The Academy made the annoucement, Chance tweeted, “The victory this morning isn’t about me, it’s about all the Soundcloud albums that may now be recognized for excellence.” You can see Chance’s tweet below.
