Smokepurpp came up amidst the SoundCloud era and has since exploded into the mainstream light. Boasting 3.8 million followers on Instagram alone, real name Omar Jeffery Pineiro has established his own cult-like following, unleashing banger after banger for audiences all across the world. Most recently, he returned to drop his highly-anticipated debut album titled Deadstar 2, executive produced by Houston legend Mike Dean. The 17-track project features lead single “Dirty Dirty” featuring Lil Skies, along with features from Trippie Redd, Ty Dolla $ign, Moneybagg Yo, and Denzel Curry. The 22-year-old recently stopped by Power 106 for an exclusive interview with DJ Felli Fel to discuss his new album, his new crib in Los Angeles, the negative effects of lean use, what he uses to produce, and more.

Off the rip, Felli asks Smokepurpp about his lean use and why he decided to stop. In fact, he addresses first trying lean at a young age in high school, and not stopping until only this year. Purpp explains, “That shit really really fucks up your stamina. Really everything, it makes you slower. it really messes up everything for real. That’s really why I stopped, because I gained weight. I was just using it to make music, to help me with my creativity and shit like that. I record a lot. I record every day. I felt like lean just helped my creativity flow better, sometimes when I have writer’s block, etc. When I wasn’t sipping lean, I would get frustrated writing and I’d overthink it. The lean would calm me down and let whatever came to me flow out better.”

Shifting the focus to the music, Purpp talks about how Deadstar 2 is his best project to date. He states, “This is my best project I’ve put out. Sonically, it sounds different than all my shit. It sounds amazing, shout out Mike Dean. I talk more about myself. I gave the fans what they want to hear, but I also gave them what I wanted to hear myself.”

Speaking on his favorite songs, Purpp states,“Red Bottoms” for sure, “Matrix,” “Audi II” of course, the Moneybagg Yo song, the Ty Dolla $ign song. Man I really fuck with everything on there for real. [laughs].”

While fans cans can vibe out to Deadstar 2 through the new year, they can expect another project from Purpp within the next few months. Watch above as Purpp touches on working with Mike Dean, love for Los Angeles, producing, and his dream collabs!
